Seed

Also known as: Level 3, Seed Round, Seed Stage

The third funding level in the GAITS Funding Readiness Framework: structured investment against defined milestones, where the primary risk is execution under real-world conditions and the team must present a coherent business case alongside technical progress.

Full Definition

Seed is Level 3 of the GAITS Funding Readiness Framework. It is a structured round against defined milestones. Funders expect more than a working product. They expect a team that understands the commercial problem it is solving: who the economic buyer is, what the pricing model is, and which market the team enters first, and why.

This is the level where most healthcare innovation teams find their largest gaps. Scientific and clinical progress outpaces commercial and regulatory clarity. A team that cannot identify its economic buyer, as distinct from the clinical end user, is not Seed ready, however strong the science.

Funder logic at Seed is predominantly financial. Mission funders at this scale apply the same technical criteria but assess impact and dissemination in place of revenue and return. The most common failure is a milestone plan that is not tied to valuation inflection points, so investors cannot see what changes, commercially or technically, at each milestone.

Example

A diagnostics team has a working assay in use at two hospital laboratories under an investigational protocol, with initial validation data. Investors decline the round because the team cannot name the economic buyer or show how its price was tested. The team identifies the laboratory director as the buyer, tests its pricing with both laboratories, and returns with a milestone plan that states what changes in the risk profile at each step.
