IP
Also known as: Intellectual Property, Patent, Trade Secret
Intellectual Property — legally protected creations including patents, trade secrets, copyrights, and trademarks.
Full Definition
IP protection is a critical element of the H-BMC Key Resources block. In healthcare, IP strategy typically centers on patents (utility patents for device mechanisms, method patents for algorithms and processes, design patents for form factors) and trade secrets (particularly for manufacturing processes and proprietary datasets). IP due diligence is a standard component of investor and acquirer review. Freedom-to-operate analysis — confirming the company's technology does not infringe existing patents — is required before significant capital deployment.
Example
A surgical robotics company holds three utility patents covering its haptic feedback mechanism, a method patent covering its surgical planning algorithm, and a trade secret covering its instrument manufacturing process. The IP portfolio is a key element of its Key Resources and a primary driver of its acquisition value.
