KOL

Also known as: Key Opinion Leader, Clinical Champion, Thought Leader

Key Opinion Leader — a clinician or researcher whose expertise and reputation significantly influence clinical practice and adoption of new technologies.

Full Definition

KOLs shape adoption through publication, conference presentations, training programs, and peer-to-peer influence. They can accelerate adoption as clinical champions or block it as anti-buyers. KOL strategy involves identifying the right KOLs for the target specialty, understanding their motivations and evidence standards, and building relationships through clinical research, advisory boards, and training programs. KOLs are a distinct category in the H-BMC Expert Influencers block.
Example
A diagnostic company recruits three high-profile radiologists as scientific advisory board members. Their published validation study in a major journal becomes the primary clinical evidence cited by health system VACs when evaluating the technology.
